Kefalonia is part of the Archipelago of the Ionian Islands facing the Gulf of Corinth and very close to the coasts of the wonderful Peloponnese. The largest of all its sisters, it is a much sought after destination especially by families and those who want a holiday in Greece based on the wonderful sea and many things to visit.

Kefalonia has a very particular morphology, ranging from high irregular coasts to gulfs that give rise to small bays with coasts of sand so white that it looks like talc with an electric blue sea, to mountains covered in dense vegetation with woods and pine forests. It is no coincidence that the island is home to many varieties and species of both plants and animals such as the rare black fir and a particular breed of wild horses that roam undisturbed and protected on Mount Enos. This precious and priceless gift from Mother Nature is part of the National Park which deals with the protection and conservation of this still uncontaminated and fundamental environment for the island. And picturesque villages and towns with elegant palaces, rural houses and ruins of ancient temples, here's what to expect from Kefalonia.

Given its dimensions which are not small at all, it is essential when planning a holiday in Kefalonia to choose the place to act as a base camp. Based on your time availability you can opt for one area rather than another, our advice is that if your stay is for a week it would be better to stay towards the center so as to be convenient for getting around the island. If you are among the lucky ones to have two weeks you could opt for one part to the west and the remainder to the east.

It must be said that the island is much loved by the English, in fact many have decided to settle permanently as have many Italians, in fact it will not be a surprise to hear our language spoken almost everywhere.

Don't miss the capital Argostoli, completely rebuilt after the violent earthquake of 1953, trying to preserve its neoclassical style architecture. It is a lively town where you will find a vast choice of taverns, restaurants and shops. Every morning at the port you could also have nice encounters with the caretta-caretta turtles, who lurk around the fishing boats to scrounge a free meal. Argostoli is located right in the middle of a curious geological phenomenon where the sea disappears between underground tunnels and then appears in the wonderful Melissani Lake fed by both salt water and fresh water.

Nearby you can also admire the Drogorati Cave with its large cave of stalactites which miraculously partially escaped the earthquake which practically caused the roof of the cave to collapse if we want to call it that and when the sun is right above it, it creates unique and suggestive lighting effects.

On the hills of Kefalonia, a particular grape, Robola, is produced which is then transformed into the famous wine of the same name, famous throughout Greece and a must-try during your stay.

People come here for a quiet holiday, there is nightlife but only in the larger inhabited centers and in any case it is never noisy or transgressive, Kefalonia is chosen for its spectacular sea, for its beaches and for its nature. Walking lovers will be able to satisfy their pleasures especially in the hinterland where there are various paths up to the top of Mount Einos or Enos call it whatever you prefer through a rich and different environment.

Kefalonia is also one of the favorite islands for nesting turtles which arrive every year to lay their eggs and continue the species. The beaches where these graceful animals usually like to breed are Mounda beach and Koroni beach in the southern part of the island.

It is also possible with an excursion to go and take a trip to the nearby island of Ithaca, land of the mythical Ulysses, starting from the port of Sami or from Skala or to the green Zakynthos, a paradise from all points of view, taking the ship from Poros and or from Skala.

We recommend renting a car if you want to visit Kefalonia, there is so much to see and just as much road to travel, it would be a shame to miss out on so many wonders!
