Fiskardo o Fiscardo Village Kefalonia

2 minutes to read

The picturesque Fiskardo village is found in the north east of the Kefalonia island in a small bay.

In the shape of an amphitheater, it was once a simple fishing village, which has now become one of the most beautiful and fascinating seaside resorts. A country with a romantic flavor with its colorful Venetian-style houses, small taverns and restaurants with excellent traditional cuisine overlooking the harbor, shops where you can find the perfect gift, a promenade where you can take a stroll after dinner or through the pine forest to reach the lighthouse where if the sky is clear you can see the beautiful Ithaca island, with its pretty port where fishermen come back in the morning and sell their fresh fish, where time seems to have stopped, this is what you will find in Fiskardo, a quiet life that follows the seasons without haste and without too many thoughts, all surrounded by a crystal clear sea with a turquoise and blue color.

The lush forest that surrounds Fiscardo is a small corner of paradise so much so that it is under the protection of the Greek government to maintain its natural habitat of great ecological value.

Fiscardo was the ancient city of Panormos mentioned by Herodotus in the 4th century BC and this is demonstrated by the discovery near the port of a plaque where the Athenians thanked the inhabitants for the concession to hunt in the prosperous area of animals. During a construction of a hotel in 2006, a Roman cemetery with gold jewelry, bronze utensils, gold leaves and copper coins comes to light. Also in the same area were found the finds of a perfectly preserved theater with stone stairways exactly where they were positioned and in addition to the thermal baths dated 146 BC. C, and last but not least an ancient stone door. It owes its name to the Normans during their period of domination in Greece. Fiskardo is the only village left unharmed by the terrible earthquake of 1953 which almost destroyed the island.

It does not have a local beach like most of the seaside towns, but it does not matter, the whole coast offers some of the most beautiful coasts of the island, easily reachable both with a vehicle and a walk as Fiskardo boasts well-marked paths with lots of of indications about the flora and fauna that you meet on the way that pass for some sections in the beautiful pine forest.

The two most famous beaches in the area are certainly Emplisi beach and Foki beach. The first of small white pebbles with a backdrop that descends quite quickly but with a clean and transparent sea with an intense turquoise, is not equipped so 'if you want to spend the day remember to prune everything you need especially to shelter from the sun. During the summer, a mobile kiosk for something to drink and quick to eat. A natural pool perfect for snorkeling and for those who love to swim. On the sides, gentle hills with thick vegetation and rocky coasts where the rich and lively marine fauna will be a pleasant attraction and then the sea with crazy colors that together with the surrounding environment looks like a postcard.

The second, Foki beach which is closer in comparison to Emplisi beach, is located about one kilometer from the Fiskardo village. A beach of very white pebbles mixed with sand where the intense turquoise sea meets a small bay surrounded by cypresses and rocks. She is also not equipped but behind her there is an excellent tavern where you can put your feet under the table and let yourself go to the pleasures of the throat all with a rigorous sea view. Do you know why it is called that?

Foki in Greek means "seal" and it all comes from the presence of an ancient abandoned mine where seals love to take shelter and, if you are one of the lucky ones, you might even meet one !. Along the coast on the right there is an enchanting cave that can be reached by swimming or through a small path, very wide and full of tunnels where stories were used as a refuge for the inhabitants during the war.

Let's not forget other equally beautiful but perhaps less noble beaches that are certainly worth a visit such as Kimilia beach reachable through a path in the woods with a spectacular sea and a small shoreline of fine gravel. On the right side there are large flat rocks where you can lie down and enjoy the warm Greek sun. Obviously it is not equipped so remember to bring everything. Also worth visiting Alaties beach, very small but an Eden, and Agia Jerusalem beach the only one equipped and with a tavern where to eat or drink something, certainly a little expensive compared to the others but the landscape is worth all the money you will spend.

What to see in Fiskardo

Let's say that getting bored is almost impossible, in addition to the historical part such as the Roman cemetery, there is the Venetian lighthouse and the tower on the promontory where among other things you can enjoy a fantastic view, the Environmental Museum in the old school and the Historical Museum. For beach lovers, on the other hand, from the small port there is a wide choice of excursions to discover the most beautiful coasts and why not a trip to the nearby islands such as Ithaca, home of Ulysses and equally wonderful.

Nightlife in Fiskardo is not lacking, super fashion clubs, bars on the seafront, excellent restaurants, such as Acqua Alaties Beach perfect for an aperitif at sunset, or the Cinema Music Club inside an old cinema with evenings based on house, hip hop or Greek music.

In conclusion we can tell you that Fiskardo is absolutely to be put on the list of things to see in Kefalonia, a different village, with a particular atmosphere, we dare to say even more elegant than other places on the island suitable for both couples and families with children.
