Jerusalem Beach Kefalonia

2 minutes to read

The Agia Jerusalem Beach, we find it in the northwestern part of the Kefalonia island about twenty minutes from Fiscardo near the Chalikieri village.

Wedged in a small cove that gives rise to two coasts divided between them by a large rock, it has a pebble coast, bathed by clear and crystalline waters, a sea that takes on a multitude of shades of blue to intense turquoise typical of the Greek Islands, with a rocky bottom that descends quickly.

It is partly equipped with sun beds and umbrellas while for something to drink or eat a typical tavern offers delicacies based on classic Greek and local cuisine. For those who want to feel free and wild, a stretch of the beach is completely free so you can spread out your towel where it will most attract you and spend a wonderful day at the beach. The area is perfect for snorkelling and diving lovers as it offers depths rich in marine flora and fauna including the beautiful seahorses of which it is full. However, beware of the currents that are quite strong in this stretch of sea.

Before arriving at Agia Jerusalem beach you meet the Alties Beach which in Greek literally means salty, a cove we would almost dare to call it of soft sand well protected from the wind by two white rocks overlooking the sea.

It owes its name to the small stone chapel of the 11th century, built by the Norman crusader Roberto Il Guiscardo (hence the name Fiscardo) around which various legends revolve. The first narrates that when Guiscardo fell ill he asked to drink the water from the well of the chapel which can still be admired today on the beach for treatment but was unsuccessful. The perhaps more credible one instead tells that Il Guiscardo was given a prophecy that announced his death once he arrived in Jerusalem. Everyone thought that he was referring to the Holy Land without considering that in Kefalonia, the stage where the crusaders stopped during their pilgrimage, there was a place called Jerusalem where Il Guiscardo ended his days.

During the high season, the Jerusalem beach is also used by local fishermen based in Fiscardo, finding the small port much less crowded and chaotic, therefore ideal for docking their boats.

From the Jerusalem beach given its position you can enjoy a sunset that you will hardly be able to forget, made of warm and bright colors as if they were a painting, a real emotion of the senses.

How to get to Jerusalem Beach

First of all it must be specified that it takes a vehicle of its own that is a car or scooter that changes little, certainly not a public transport because there are no races to this beach. Take direction towards Magganos, at a certain point you will find a sign indicating Chlikeri on the right, follow it and go down for about ten minutes towards the sea below. At the crossroads, go straight on passing Alaties beach. At this point, turn left past the bins staying on the paved road that will take you to the Jerusalem beach in no time.

An idyllic environment that is always quiet even in August, perfect for a relaxing day at the sea, so to be noted among the things to see in Kefalonia if you are looking for no stress.
