Kounopetra Beach Kefalonia

2 minutes to read

The mysterious Kounopetra Beach, we find it in the beautiful Paliki Peninsula in the northwestern part of the Kefalonia Island. The lively town of Lixouri is less than ten kilometers away.

A beautiful inlet that offers a long coastline of soft sand with a dark golden color, sometimes tending to red, bathed by clean and crystalline waters and almost always calm given its position sheltered by a high and scenic white cliff behind and a sea of a thousand shades blue with a gently sloping backdrop making it suitable for families with children.

The mix of colors in this small corner of Kefalonia make the Kounopetra beach a real postcard that becomes even more beautiful at the time of sunset that you absolutely must not miss when the sky takes on warm tones and the sea turns into a mirror that it reflects and reflects an almost mystical light making the atmosphere poignant and unforgettable.

Kounopetra beach is equipped with with sunbeds, umbrellas and a small kiosk for a cool drink and something quick to eat, but despite its notoriety, it always remains a place of peace with a feeling of isolation broken only by the sound of the waves. Here you can have fun snorkeling among the rocks or inspect the depths of the sea with a mask and fins and still given the clayey nature of the cliffs, get mud therapy like in a luxurious spa but at no cost.

But let's get to the real peculiarity of Kounopetra beach. Let's start with its name which immediately gives the first clue, Kounopetra in Greek means “stone that moves”. A large flat-shaped rock that just comes out of the water was until 1953 the year in which a terrible earthquake upset the balance of the island of Kefalonia, one of the most curious natural phenomena in the world. It used to constantly move from east to west every twenty minutes and its slow movement could also be seen from the coast as well as perceiving the vibrations if you were on it. A mystery still not revealed and that perhaps we will never be able to understand since after the earthquake the stone no longer had this movement but it remains a fascinating story that will forever be linked to this beach.

Kounopetra beach is also very close to the legendary Xi beach just five kilometers north and to Mega Lakos beach just after Xi beach.

An excellent opportunity if you go to Kounopetra beach, is to stop at the Mantzavinata Village (in Greek it means to eat and wine and "ata" is the typical ending of the places in Kefalonia) moved more inland to taste the famous Matzavino nectar a well known passito of remote origin. The small village surrounded by rolling hills covered with groves and vineyards, is the classic Greek semi-mountain village with a small square called Lemonata and three churches to visit, two of which date back to the seventeenth century. Together with the Vouni village and the Vardianoi islet it forms the community of Katogi. Like every place in Greece, Mantzavinata also has its own history, it is hypothesized that the Maspale hill was the ancient acropolis while in Vazza a mosaic from the Roman era was unearthed, now preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Kefalonia.

How to get to Kounopetra Beach

First of all you have to reach the Paliki Peninsula and here taking Lixouri as a reference point, go southwest. The road is easy and well marked so it will not be difficult at all to get there.

A pleasant itinerary combining perhaps even the Xi beach and a drink at Mantzavinata village therefore, it is necessary to include it among the things to see in Kefalonia.
