Shiza Promontory and Kampi Village Zakynthos

2 minutes to read

Kampi village is found on the west coast of the beautiful Zakynthos island at three hundred meters above sea level on the Shiza Promontory. A classic mountain village, made up of small narrow paved streets that intersect between traditional stone houses and where the rhythms and habits are still like they used to be.

Kampi or also called Kabi by the locals, has not yet undergone the strong influence of tourism so that the inhabitants still deal with ancient crafts such as the production of olive oil and honey, the weaving of lace and carpets that are sold in the classic stalls in the center of the country.

Its panoramic position makes Kampi one of the most beautiful areas to admire the island together with the Navagio beach and the Keri Lighthouse. From a beautiful panoramic terrace you can wander with the view of the coasts of the magical Ionian Sea with its intense colors ranging from turquoise to deep blue up to the Gulf of the Seal, a beautiful fjord where the species of monk seal comes for reproduction at the sheltered interior of the caves.

Kampi village is surrounded by large fields of olive trees and vineyards close to the scenic cliff that seems to dive into the sea, a place where an intact and original nature dominates, giving that rural and typical atmosphere of the Greek islands.

The identifying symbol of Kampi is the large concrete cross that protects the island from the top of the promontory like a guardian. The monument was erected in honor of the fallen of the 1940 civil war who were brutally killed forcing them to jump off the cliff. Also in the surrounding area you can also visit an ancient cemetery dating back to the Mycenaean era with the characteristic tombs carved in stone. Both at the foot and at the top of the promontory there are some typical family-run taverns where you can stop to taste local dishes and classic Greek cuisine. While you are there, also take the opportunity to go and browse of Exo Hora and Maries villages, typical mountain villages of the Zakynthos island still dedicated to agriculture and craftsmanship where everything is still as long ago and the clock seems to have stopped.

The best time to visit the village of Kampi is certainly the sunset, given the altitude and its favorable position, you can witness one of the most beautiful miracles of nature when the sky merging with the sea creates a play of colors with various colors to be immortalized in the perfect souvenir photo of your holiday in Zakynthos. A unique experience and not to be missed!
