Argassi Village Zakynthos

2 minutes to read

Argassi village is located about four kilometers southeast of the capital Zante City at the foot of Mount Skopos, one of the largest peaks on the island with its 492 meters high and of particular interest for trekking lovers thanks to its 13 kilometers of trails in the midst of wildlife with ancient forests of particular tree species.

Argassi until a decade ago was a simple village but with the tourist expansion it has turned into a perfect town for a holiday in Zakynthos with all the comforts. It is one of the top holiday destinations in Greece for young people and families with offers for all budgets and tastes.

Normally it hosts 600 permanent inhabitants, but during the summer it is populated with visitors from all over Europe. It develops on the only main street a few hundred meters from the beach where behind it you can find accommodation facilities ranging from hotels, apartments, resorts, all services such as typical taverns or restaurants to savor Mediterranean cuisine, shops, bars, beach bars, night clubs for a perfect stay. The Argassi area is, if we can say it, of a higher level than for example in Laganas where there are also cheap accommodation, here everything is taken care of and the quality ratio obviously has a different cost.

To the south, about ten kilometers away, Vassilikos village with its beautiful beaches of fine sand, an ideal place for families with children.

What to see in Argassi

People come to Argassi above all to enjoy life from the sea and comfort, however some historical relics to visit to break up a day on the beach can be found.

Inside an inlet, an ancient bridge of Venetian origin dated 1806 with three arches where one half is in the middle of the sea and the other part on the sand, perfect for a suggestive souvenir photo, perhaps at sunset.

The ancient Roman aqueduct in the hinterland that supplied water to the entire area and the town. To reach it there are no indications you have to rely on the locals who will show you which dirt road to take and venture almost blindly but it can be a great opportunity to explore the surroundings.

Behind the village above one of the most important mountains of Zakynthos, Mount Skopos where according to Greek mythology the goddess Artemis Goddess of hunting lived, is the beautiful Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa the oldest church on the island, the only one with a dome and where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea.

The 16th century church of Agios Spyridon, looted by pirates, destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1953 and restored to its original form in 2009.

And again the remains of the Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos Megalomatis (the Great Eye) about four kilometers from Argassi on Mount Skopos one of the few still preserved on the island which with its strategic position offers a view of the Peloponnese coast up to Kyllini castle port of the mainland where ferries leave to reach Zakynthos.

Argassi beach

Let's start by saying that it is not among the most beautiful of the coasts of Zakynthos, but it is still very convenient if for a day you don't want to go around discovering the area. It is not really a continuous beach, but a succession of inlets of the gulf rich in luxuriant vegetation. The coast is made up of sand and small pebbles washed by blue and clean waters. The seabed drops gently therefore suitable for families with children and those who are not a perfect swimmer. It is equipped with sun beds and umbrellas, while to eat or drink something you can choose from the various beach bars, bars and taverns that are located directly behind the beach. The best time to enjoy Argassi beach is sunset when the sun and the sea take on spectacular and magical colors.

Nightlife in Argassi

Argassi also offers a lot of nightlife for the people, it is certainly less chaotic and transgressive than the nearby Laganas but still manages to satisfy all demands. In the center there are clubs open until the wee hours with live music and evenings with DJ sets. Just outside the town there are 4 trendy discos and very popular with young people, the Minima open from 11.00 pm to 7.00 am, a club with funky pop decorations and lights that create a lively atmosphere for dancing to the end. The Cebu Club where dance music and traditional music with the often participation of Greek artists gives exciting evenings, Barrage Club founded in 1991 and defined as one of the best dance clubs in the world where famous international DJs alternate for unforgettable evenings based on excellent music, and finally but not for merit the Gatsby open from midnight until 6.00 in the morning and frequented above all by the Greeks so if you want to fully enter the Hellenic culture this is the place for you.
