Plakaki Beach Zakynthos

And here we are at one of the most beautiful, secret, difficult to reach and less crowded spots of the fabulous Zakynthos Island, Plakaki beach. We find it in the southern part of the island on the western side and the closest point to this little lost corner of paradise is the village of Aglas. The first town with all services is Laganas in the opposite direction after about fourteen kilometres.

In reality it is not really a beach, so much so that it is perhaps better known by the name of Cape Plakaki, but rather a large flat rock where you can lie down and enjoy a stretch of sea that is perhaps among the best in Zakynthos. In summary then, upon your arrival you will find yourself in a small cove with this large white rock that serves as a platform for sunbathing, crystalline waters of an almost surreal transparency, a sea of a blue-green color that will make you think almost of being in some tropical area and a seabed that becomes immediately deep.

The environmental scenario is something incredible, going down towards the rock, on your right you will notice two enormous stacks that as if by magic emerge from the Aegean while on your left a small islet with some hints of vegetation. In the background spectacular cliffs shaped by atmospheric events and a sea so beautiful that it will leave you breathless.

Plakaki beach given its remote position and above all the lack of comfort to reach it, is usually frequented by the local population who know very well which are the most beautiful and intimate corners of the Zakynthos Island. You might meet some adventurous tourists, but they are few, so it is perfect for those who want a moment of sublime ecstasy in a still totally wild and intact nature.

Needless to say, you will have arrived there on your own, that Plakaki beach is not equipped at all, here only and exclusively a spirit of adaptation so if you decide to spend a few hours there during your holiday in Zakynthos, remember that first of all you need to have shoes suitable for reaching the point where you can swim and sunbathe (flip flops banned, you need tennis shoes because the path is practically a stairway carved out of the rocks therefore slippery and dangerous from a certain point of view), bring little stuff as the ascent is even steeper than the descent, water to hydrate, food if you feel peckish, sunscreen to protect yourself from the hot Hellenic rays considering that the area is exposed from 11 in the morning until sunset and maybe a hat.

Said like this, it seems more like torture rather than a beautiful moment, but believe us, the commitment and precautions to take into consideration are nothing compared to the show that will open to you when you arrive.

Plakaki beach is not suitable for families with small children or those with mobility problems because reaching it is a bit tiring and above all demanding. Those who, on the other hand, will be able to fully enjoy it are snorkellers who can have a great time here exploring the seabed and the sea caves that have formed over time and in this regard, at least remember the mask. Even those who like to swim and above all know how to swim well, Cape Plakaki will be a pleasant parenthesis during the holiday in Greece.

On the way back you can go and visit the legendary wells of Andronios the dragon who lived in Zakynthos and also the cave of Damianos the ruler and protector of the island.

And what about the sunset time? From Cape Plakaki you will see one of the most beautiful of Zakynthos!

Therefore, it is certainly not a walk in the park but in any case with a little good will and attention it is feasible. First you need to reach the mountain village of Aglas and be autonomous with a vehicle, there is no other alternative. Leave your car or moped in a sort of clearing that acts as a parking lot and then continue on foot along a winding path carved into the rock for about a hundred meters with a comfortable handrail that will help you and give you safety along the way until you reach the cliff above a large flat rock. To enter the sea on the left there is a more comfortable space without having to dive.
