Mizithres Zakynthos

The stacks of Mizithres are another of the major attractions of Zakynthos. We find them just below the Keri Lighthouse in the southwestern part one of the best places to admire the landscape of the island, especially at sunset.

Two rock formations with a light color and a conical shape, a larger one and a smaller one that, rising upwards, seem to magically emerge from the seabed. Their curious name derives from the traditional cheese that is produced on the island of Zakynthos the Mizithra (try it is phenomenal).

Beautiful, spectacular and mammoth, they are among the things to see in Zakynthos absolutely, it would be a real shame not to visit them, because the contrast between the sea that surrounds them with its intense blue color and the white of the rocks is a real own ecstasy for the eyes. There are strong currents around the stacks and there is also one of the deepest places in the whole Mediterranean, the so-called “Inouses well” which reaches a depth of 4500 meters practically an abyss.

At one time their name was Mizithres Islands because they were completely detached from the coast, with the earthquake of 2018 instead the largest stack was joined during the earthquake to the cliff behind through large rocks that collapsed.

The small beach of sand mixed with white pebbles is magnificent, a small paradise where you can relax and take a swim. Given its small size, few people can stay there and given its beauty, highly sought after by visitors, take into account that you may not even fully enjoy it. Mizithres beach is also perfect for snorkelers given the amount of rock formations that are the optimal habitat for many small fish. So arm yourself with fins and a mask to explore the seabed and go in search of its inhabitants.

If you want to enjoy the sea and the beach, the only solution is the boat. You can decide whether to participate in one of the organized excursions that many agencies offer. The visit also includes the beautiful Keri caves with a stop of about an hour on the idyllic beach of Mizithres. For the lucky ones, on the other hand, the possibility of renting a private boat and wandering around the area at will without time constraints and without dividing spaces. From the port it takes about forty minutes of navigation to reach the Mizithres.

If, on the other hand, you want a panoramic view from the top that is also amazing even if totally different, you will have to have a vehicle that is car, scooter or better still a quad and reach the Keri Lighthouse where the view is crazy over the Mizithres and the whole landscape surrounding. Coming by land you can also take advantage of admiring the sunset from the cliff, a spectacle impossible to explain in words. You park in a large open space and with a short walk you reach the terrace. Be careful to lean out, the height is about two hundred meters and it is quite suggestive to look down.
