Peloponneso

Gerakas Fjord Peloponnese

2 minutes to read

The Peloponnese area, this great unknown still to mass tourism, offers an environment that you cannot even imagine how beautiful and varied it is until you decide for your holiday in Greece to choose it instead of the classic Greek Islands.

Premise are two completely different types of holidays but if you are a little adventurous like us, we are sure it will be a pleasant surprise and that you will want to visit again because the atmosphere that reigns here has a unique and inimitable flavor.

Today we want to tell you about the Gerakas Fjord. It is located about twenty-four kilometers north of the characteristic village of Monemvasia which seems to be suspended between the sea and the sky (even here you will have to jump in it is something indescribable). To get to the Gerakas Fjord the road is a succession of olive trees and the typical rural landscape up to the basin with its shallow waters so as to give you the impression of being in the typical Norwegian fjord there are so many similarities between them.

The Gerakas Fjord is located at the southernmost point of Europe and is the seventh largest natural harbor in the country. It comes from a marine lagoon and its extraordinary primordial beauty is the perfect habitat for many species of rare birds (flamingos arrive in spring) as well as a purely native flora that grows only here. This area is very popular with bird watchers who come from all over the world to admire these treasures of Mother Nature.

In ancient times Gerakas was the perfect hiding place for pirates and marauders since the time of the Byzantines and when the Venetians came to protect the entrance they put a large chain hence the Italianized name Porto Cadena.

The village of the same name is located on the northern part of the fjord and has just a few fishermen's houses, some excellent taverns that offer fresh fish dishes (on the other hand, if you can't find it here '...) and most importantly not much beaten by mass tourism because miraculously still quite secret.

The territory of the Gerakas area also offers high quality local products such as oil and local wine.

The quay usually hosts sailboats or small yachts, the lucky and intrepid ones who go as far as these wonderful places on the mainland.

If you fancy a swim, at the end of the walkway, you will find a comfortable ladder that will help you immerse yourself in a sea of crystal clear and emerald green waters.

How to get to the Gerakas Fjord

First of all, a car is essential for a holiday in the Peloponnese. That you rent it rather than your own property does not matter it is absolutely necessary as public rides are difficult to combine with destinations (in some cases they do not even get there) and above all the times often and willingly do not coincide with the timetable gear.

Then head towards the Region of Laconia and drive to the west coast. Keep Monemvasia as a reference point that we recommend you to go and see especially at sunset at the top of the fortress, the show is to scream, then following the coastal road and the road signs for Gerakas.

An important stage in your wandering through the Peloponnese, even just for a lunch, will be hours of relaxation in the midst of primitive nature where your senses will be satisfied by so much calm and spontaneity, sometimes very rare but fundamental sensations for our life.
