Andros

Tris Grias To Pidima Andros

2 minutes to read

The spectacular monolith that, as if by magic, appears from the sea a few meters from the shore, which in Greek means "the leap of the old woman", is certainly the most photographed place on the whole Andros island and that you will find on most postcards, they represent it.

There are various versions of the origin of this marvel, the first legend tells that the Turks to conquer the difficult Kochilos castle, sent an elderly woman to ask for help for the daughter who was expecting a child. Obviously this request (the Greeks are always ready to help those in difficulty), the impregnable door was opened and the Turks managed to enter, thus conquering the Andros island. The moment the old woman became aware of the disaster caused she was so ashamed for the betrayal that she reached the cliff and threw herself into the sea. From here the rock was born that according to the locals, when viewed from a particular angle, looks exactly like the profile of a woman with a scarf on her head.

Another version, on the other hand, tells that an elderly woman pursued by the Turks to escape capture, preferred to climb on the rock and commit suicide. A third story instead, speaks of a desperate gesture of a woman who, after the death of her third husband, chose to take her own life rather than remain alone.

What the truth is, as always we will never know, it is certain that this beautiful gift of nature must surely be seen if you decide to spend your holidays in Greece on the Andros island.
